Are you going to be one of the 91% of people who DON’T follow through on your New Year’s Resolutions? Or simply put, goals for the year.
I have also just read a statistic that “43% of people expect to fail before February / quit in January”. In all my years of coaching, I believe the reason is simple… A general intention was made on the 2nd of January and that is as far as it went.
If 2023 is your year for following through on your intentions, here are the 3 simple steps that will make this year different for you:
- Formulate Your Goal Statement. There is a reason I have, until now, referred to New Year’s Resolutions as ‘intentions’. Intentions are great, but they are too abstract to execute. They usually are framed along the lines of, “This year I’m going to be healthier”, or “This year I’m going to take better care of me”. But what does this actually mean? What is “healthier” to that person and what is “better care”. The intangibility allows the intention to evaporate.
So, turn your intentions into a Goal. Put simply, how will you know you have achieved your intention, or even better, how would your friends know if you have it or not. Get clear on what the outcome looks like, sounds like and feels like.
- Get Clear On Actions. What are 1-3 actions, that can be done on a daily or weekly basis, that if done would guarantee you your result? Get clear on these and put a reminder in your diary to execute.
- Bonus Tip – All results are the result of consistent action. Some actions take you towards your goal and some will take you away from your goal. Work through an activity of getting clear on what actions you need to START DOING, what actions you need to STOP DOING and what actions you are already doing that you need to KEEP DOING.
- Finally, focus on the feeling you will have as a result of achieving your goal. Stay connected to this and keep a reminder handy, as this is the key to keeping on track when things get tough.
